La Porta Ristorante & Wine Bar, a new restaurant that was to open, was in need of a new brand identity design in order to make a memorable first impression. The project included everything from a logo, business cards, website, outdoor signage, and more.
“La Porta” means “The Door” in Italian, with that in mind I explored a variety approaches for the logo that leveraged different elements of a door; including a decorative window and door knocker. I also took into consideration that head chef Peter McAndrews was not born of Italian heritage, in fact Irish, and is a native of Philadelphia.
While designing the wrought iron door knocker, I incorporated the shape of a four leaf clover into the graphic to bring in a touch of Irish tradition into the final design.
In choosing a typeface, I wanted to use a glyph that was classic and gave a sense of structure while also embodying embellishments. After playing with a variety of options, I chose a hand-tooled serif font.
